One of just a few major bridges along the coast. The current Big Sur Scenic Route follows the original road laid down in the 1930's. Most of the time when there are canyons or rivers, the road winds inland down to where the canyon is narrow enough to cross with a short bridge, then it winds back out towards the sea to circumvent the next mountain. It's definitely not straight 'as the crow flies'. |
