Along this fabled coastline the granite cliffs of the Santa Lucia Range plunge into the Pacific, and waves are beaten to a froth on the rocks below. Route 1 climbs as high as 1,000 feet above the sea, winding along the steep cliffs. The road is narrow without shoulders, with rock walls rising up into the mountains or cliffs dropping to the sea, mere inches from the white lines on either side of the road. The only places to stop are the pull-offs, many of which are not safely accessible when heading northbound. Canon EOS DIGITAL REBEL XT
