Tidal Zone Hierarchy - April 23, 2009
There is a definite hierarchy on the coastal rocks. The bare guano-covered rocks on top are always exposed. That's where the birds and seals hang out at high tide. Below that is a brown layer of tiny barnacles which spend most of their lives exposed to the air. Below them are the large mussel beds and the larger barnacles. Below the mussel beds is the seaweed.
