Mountains - April 28, 2009
The snow-covered Sierra Nevada present an impenetrable north/south ridge in eastern California. Only two routes - Interstate 80 and Hwy 50, both near Lake Tahoe - go east/west over the mountains and are actually open year-round. The other handful of mountain roads, all up here where the mountains are still distinct peaks, are closed in winter, buried under deep snow from the end of October until around the end of May. Further south the Sierra Nevada become one giant ridge of 14,000' peaks and there are no roads across at all. Canon EOS DIGITAL REBEL XT
