Mono Lake, Old Marina Site - April 28, 2009
Mono Lake is an ancient lake more than a million years old. Fresh water evaporating from the lake each year has left the salts behind, so the lake is now two and a half times as salty and eighty times as alkaline as seawater. Even so, the lake teems with life; brine shrimp and alkali flies which feed on the algae, provide a plentiful food supply for more than eighty species of migratory birds that visit the lake each spring and summer.
