In 1941 the city of Los Angeles began diverting four of the five major streams that feed Mono Lake. The diversion caused the lake level to drop more than 40 feet, exposing the tufa towers growing beneath the water's surface. Once exposed to the air they stop growing. The tufa formations here at South Tufa are estimated to be between 200 and 900 years old. |
