Another white heron perched on the mangrove. Mangrove roots filter out the salts in the water so the tree above gets only fresh water. The salts need to go somewhere, so the plant deposits them into 'sacrificial leaves' which eventually turn yellow and die, then fall off. The leaves then decompose in the water providing nutrients for the sea creatures. |
