The tracks in front of us continue on to Launch-pad 39A - the only launch-pad still being used to launch the shuttle. The launch-pad appears to be a giant concrete mound. The liquid fuels are kept at a distance from the actual launch-pad - one of the white fuel tanks is visible on the right, but the other is way off to the left out of the picture. If there were to be an accident during launch the blast would be like an atomic bomb, so the closest safe launch-viewing site is two miles from the launch-pad. But because this part of Florida is so flat, the launch-pad is clearly visible - even from 10 miles away back on the mainland. |
