One of these last two photos is actually an entrance to a Kiva - a sacred, traditional meeting place. After the pueblo was finally conquered by the Spanish, all the inhabitants were forced to become Catholic, with severe repercussions if they refused. So they all did, but still continued in their old ways in secret Kivas made to look like regular homes. |
